This user guide is written primarily for the RescueGroups.org Manage interface. Instructions for the website or Pet Adoption Portal interface may be included in expandable sections in the page; however, we strongly recommend that you use the Manage interface.

Where do I find it?
You can find the Pet Adoption iFrame page by going to Features > Pet Adoption iFrame

The following instructions will guide you through creating a Facebook "app" so that you can display your adoptable pets on your Facebook page.

  • The iFrame for Facebook is completely and totally free for the users of any of our services.
  • As your pet list is updated on your RescueGroups.org service, your pet list will automatically update changes in real-time on your Facebook page.

Creating and installing the iFrame is done in four steps

  • Step 1: Login to your rescuegroups.org service to get your iFrame information.
  • Step 2: You need to be "verified" by Facebook to use the developer tool. This is a security measure from Facebook to ensure you are not a robot and that you are not adding a malicious app.
  • Step 3: Create the app that displays the iFrame.
  • Step 4: Add the App to your organizations Facebook page.
Need help creating a Facebook page or installing the iFrame?
We do offer options for you if you'd like our help getting your organization's Facebook page setup, or the iFrame added to your existing page.
You can see those options on our pricing page.
Please Note: This will NOT work with a basic user Facebook page or a Facebook "Group".  It will only work with a Facebook Page (previously called a Fan page).

You can create one on Facebook here.  If you are unsure, feel free to contact us first. You also need to be a Page Admin on your organizations Facebook Page.

Special thanks to Georgia SPCA for letting us use their app install in our example below.

Step 1: Getting your RescueGroups.org iFrame Information

First you'll login to your RescueGroups.org account to retrieve the information you will need to create the iFrame on Facebook.

This feature is available to Site Admin's.
  • Login to your account at manage.rescuegroups.org
  • Click on Features > Pet Adoption iFrame

  • You will then see the links you will paste into the App on Facebook.
  • You will return to this page later.

Tip: Leave this browser window open so you can copy and paste these urls into Facebook.

Open a new browser window or browser tab to continue with the Facebook instructions below.

Step 2: Becoming Authorized on Facebook to Add the App

The information below is for once you have been approved as a developer and can create and add the iFrame app.
Note: Because Facebook changes their process often, you may need to consult their help guides on how to be authorized.

Go to the Facebook developers page: https://developers.facebook.com

3) Step 3: Creating the iFrame App on Facebook

  • Click Create New App

  • Enter the Captcha
  • Click Submit

For this next step, you'll use the information from Step 1.
  • You will now enter the Basic information for your App.
  • Add an icon. Tip: You can do this later
  • Add your Contact Email Address
  • Click on App on Facebook
  • Enter in the Canvas URL and Secure Canvas URL from your Rescuegroups.org service
  • Click Save Changes

You will now see a message that your changes have been saved.

Step 4: Adding the iFrame App to Your Facebook Organization Page

Now that you've created the App, you'll add it to your organizations Facebook page.

  • Click on Apps, this will take you to the main app screen.

  • On the App page, you will see the App ID and Canvas Page URL. You will use these to add the app to your organizations Facebook Page.

  • Hit return or enter on your keyboard.
  • This will bring up the screen to select the pages to add the app.
  • Choose your organization page.
  • Click Add Page Tab

  • You've now added the app to your organization page!

  • If you want to move the app,
  • Hover over the app icon
  • Click on the pencil icon
  • Swap positions with one of the other apps.

  • I swapped the position with Likes and it's now after Photos

  • Your iFrame is installed, positioned and visitors to your page can see your adoptable pets!
  • As your animal list is updated in your rescuegroups.org service (added/removed), your app is automatically updated in real-time.
